CrochetDad's Wheel Stitch Block Tutorial - Foundation Round

How to crochet a Wheel Stitch Block.

This block will be made in two colors.  I'm using Caron Worsted in One Pound skein using Lace (A) and Taupe (B) with a K crochet hook.  Crochet notations are U.S.
Foundation Rnd

Using A, let's start with a ring - pick your favorite method:
  • Method 1: ch 5 (counts as trc plus ch 1), [trc, ch 1] 11 times, in first ch, join to 4th ch with sl st, cut yarn, finish off.
  • Method 2: ch 4, join to first ch with sl st, ch 5 in ring (counts as trc plus ch 1), [trc, ch 1] 11 times in ring join to 4th ch of beginning ch 5 with sl st, cut yarn, finish off, weave in ends.
  • Method 3: (this is my favorite) Adjustable starting ring (a.k.a. Magic Ring) ch 5 in ring (counts as trc plus ch 1), [trc, ch 1] 11 times in ring, join to 4th ch of beginning ch 5 with sl st, cut yarn, finish off, weave in end.  Pull ring closed as tight as you like, weave in end of yarn.

Here's what mine looks like:

Note: When joining in the round, I use the method described in Sarah London's blog.  You can replace this method when I say "cut yarn and finish off" instead of the sl st method.

  6. My question is abt your trc, ch1. No matter what yarn and hook combination I try, I get a bowl. When I do a dc, ch1, then I get the flat wheel you've photographed. What am I doing wrong?

  7. Lunatica - which method to start the ring are you using? The trc, ch1, etc. starts after a ch 5 for the first trc, ch1.

It would be hard for me to tell you what's wrong without seeing what your "bowl" looks like.

  8. Gah! Ok .. for whatever reason, my Lupie brain interpreted your instructions to mean that I had to chain 5 to make the ring then chain 4, 3 for the trc and 1 ch! So I was making the ring by chaining 5, ss to the first ch to form the ring, then chain 4 THEN the trc + 1ch so OF COURSE I was getting a bowl!

And in my tunnel vision, focusing on making the wheel, I forgot to say THANKS for the pattern.

I ended up doing dc's instead of the trc but they still turned out pretty well, if I do say so myself. Wish I could figure out how to show you the squares I've made .. I'm making a laptop case with your squares on most of it but a different sort of "fabric" for the front. Do you have a presence on Ravelry? I'm "iluminameluna" if you care to visit. I'm posting the pics of what I've made there tonight.

Again THANKS and I wish I could come up with patterns like you do .. I do my crocheting from a structural view and I'm trying to learn all sorts of stitches and patterns 'cause there's so much I see that I want to "translate" into crochet. Just wish I had more hours in a day and fewer days with pain so that I could just sit and crochet!
